What Sets CIMT Apart?

Most of us instinctively rely on our stronger limb after an injury, a phenomenon called learned non-use. Over time the weaker limb receives fewer brain signals, falls further behind, and daily tasks become one-handed. CIMT reverses that process. The stronger limb is gently restrained with a mitt or sling, while the weaker limb practises purposeful, repetitive activities under close guidance. By forcing the brain to “wake up” dormant pathways, CIMT promotes neuroplasticity—the rewiring that restores movement, strength, and coordination.

How We Deliver CIMT

Positive reinforcement, clear coaching cues, and home-practice strategies keep motivation high and progress steady.

CIMT Beyond Stroke: Applications For Multiple Sclerosis

Muscle weakness and poor hand dexterity are common in MS, yet the brain’s capacity for plasticity remains. When tailored to disease stage and fatigue levels, CIMT can help people with MS strengthen an affected arm, improve coordination, and regain confidence in everyday activities such as lifting a kettle or typing. Each program is customised, progressing at a pace that respects fluctuations in energy and symptom severity.

Is CIMT Right For You?

Ideal candidates still have some voluntary movement in the affected limb and enough cognitive capacity to follow instructions and stay engaged. Your physiotherapist will weigh factors such as joint range, spasticity, balance, vision, and overall health to ensure CIMT is safe and worthwhile. If full CIMT is not appropriate, we can integrate modified constraint-based drills into a broader neuro-rehabilitation plan.

Everything You Need to Know

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens during a CIMT therapy session?

Therapy starts with a thorough neurological assessment and goal-setting. During sessions, the stronger limb is partially constrained while you perform everyday activities with the affected limb. Each task is repeated until speed and accuracy improve, with one-on-one guidance from a CIMT-trained physiotherapist to keep progress steady and safe

Who can benefit from CIMT?

CIMT is ideal for people who have some voluntary movement in an impaired arm or hand after a neurological injury. It is most often used for stroke survivors, but can also help individuals with conditions like cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury, or multiple sclerosis regain arm/hand function

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions depends on your condition, treatment goals, and how your body responds. Your physiotherapist will discuss a recommended plan after your initial assessment.
